Mitchell Shire Council is developing its first Biodiversity Strategy to help protect and enhance our natural environment.

What has happened so far

Stage 1: Biodiversity Asset Report
This first stage focused on identifying:

  • Key biodiversity assets across the Shire (urban, rural, and growth areas).
  • Important focal species
  • How well habitats are connected across the landscape.
  • Strategic corridors that link areas of high biodiversity value.

Community input to date

  • Community webinar (19 June 2025): Shared the process and findings from the Biodiversity Asset Report. Slides are available here
  • Focal species survey: Community feedback was gathered on 12 focal species. A fact sheet with more information is available here
  • Biodiversity Survey : Community input was gathered on what community members value about biodiversity in Mitchell Shire and ideas for future management.
  • Photo sharing : the community were invited to share photos of Mitchell Shire’s natural environment to be used in the Strategy or other Council environmental materials.

The results from Stage 1 will guide Stage 2 – the full Biodiversity Strategy, which is currently underway. This new strategy will provide a data-driven plan to maintain and restore biodiversity and improve habitat connectivity.

What's next

There will be further opportunities to be involved though an upcoming webinar (details to be confirmed) and by commenting on the Draft Strategy which will be released in the coming months.

Mitchell Shire Council is developing a Biodiversity Strategy.  The project covers all areas of Mitchell Shire including urban, rural and growth areas.

Stage 1 of the process,  the Biodiversity Asset Report, is nearing completion.  This report identifies key biodiversity assets and strategic habitat corridors thought the Shire

The data from Stage 1 will inform Stage 2 – the development of a Biodiversity Strategy.

The desired outcome of the new strategy is a data driven approach to maintaining and restoring Mitchell’s biodiversity assets, and connectivity between habitat patches.

Before commencing the development of the Strategy Council would like to know what the community values about Mitchell’s biodiversity and is seeking your ideas for how biodiversity can be better protected and enhanced.

    Submissions close 14 October 2025

Council would like to know what you value about nature and being outdoors

    Survey closes 14 October 2025

Nature is everything not made by people – like trees, rivers, animals, and insects.

Biodiversity means all the different living things working together, like a big team that keeps nature healthy.
