Mitchell Shire Council is committed to the protection and enhancement of our biodiversity, as demonstrated through the Mitchell Shire Council Plan 2021-2025 which includes a key priority to “Protect, enhance, and connect landscapes and increase the extent, variety, and quality of the natural habitat”.

As part of this commitment, Council will be developing our inaugural Biodiversity Strategy

Stage 1 - Biodiversity Asset Report

The key components for stage 1 are:

  • Identify Key Biodiversity Assets
  • Identify flagship species (flora and fauna) for Mitchell Shire
  • Assess Landscape Connectivity within the municipality and within the broader landscape
  • Identify strategic corridors linking high biodiversity value public land assets.

The project covers all areas of Mitchell Shire including urban, rural and growth areas.

The purpose of this Biodiversity Asset Report is to clearly identify the Shire's key biodiversity assets and strategic corridors to link high biodiversity value public land assets

The data from stage 1 will inform Stage 2 - development of a Biodiversity Strategy which will commence in July 2025. The desired outcome of the strategy is a data driven approach to maintaining or restoring Mitchell’s biodiversity assets, and connectivity between habitat patches.

How to get involved

Community Information session

The purpose of this webinar is to inform the community about the Biodiversity Asset report process so far, hear about the findings from the consultants working on the project, register here.

Thursday 19 June

6.30-7.30pm

Online

Flagship species survey

11 flagship species have been chosen to cover a diversity of vegetation types and habitat needs. These species also provide an opportunity to engage with the community about biodiversity. Find out more in the fact sheet. Tell us what you think about the species selection, have we missed anything significant?

Survey closes 30 June 2025.
