Landscape Assessment Study Adopted

Council at its Ordinary Meeting on 19 August 2024 resolved to endorse the Landscape Assessment Study and proceed with preparing documentation to implement the Study into the Mitchell Planning Scheme with the following changes to the proposed Significant Landscape Overlay Schedules (as summarised):

  • Modify native planning permit exemptions to address regrowth and fire safety
  • Benchmark buildings and works exemptions against nearby planning schemes
  • Insert a decision guideline for agricultural activity
  • Insert a character objective “to balance the protection of rural vistas and rural amenity while recognising the important role that agricultural and farming practices have in contributing towards the rural amenity”

Council also resolved to extend awareness of the project, prepare an impact summary of the permits and application process and acknowledge all stakeholders of the ongoing process for the project. A copy of the Landscape Assessment Study Volumes 1-3, the Council Resolution and Report and proposed Significant Landscape Overlay extents can be found on the downloads section of this page.

Mitchell Shire Council acknowledges the valuable input from all participants and remains committed to balancing the protection of our significant landscapes with the needs of ongoing farming operations.

Council Officers will commence preparation of the changes, additional reporting and further consultation as per the resolution. As a submitter or interested party you will be kept updated on the project and future consultation opportunities.
