• Signs, banners and town motifs

  

  The community has told Council that it would like to see the existing town entry signs at either end of Kilmore replaced with a larger, more noticeable and more visually appealing signs.

  As an extension of the work to upgrade the public realm and streetscape within Sydney Street, Council has commissioned a specialist signage company to come up with options for:

  • New town entry signs (to replace the existing small wooden signs)
  • New town centre precinct gateway signs
  • New designs for banners to be suspended from the lamp posts in the historic core

  Council recognises the opportunity for new signs and banners to have a major impact on Kilmore’s sense of identity and on the first impression created for visitors to Kilmore.

  The signage document provides further information on each design concept and the inspiration and thinking that has contributed to each design. The document is available in electronic form online at Engaging Mitchell or in hard copy from Kilmore Library.

  We would like to hear your views on the proposed concepts.

  It is important to note that the preferred concepts for the town entry signs and Sydney Street precinct signs will be decided as part of this project, they won’t be installed as part of this project. We are exploring external funding opportunities for this work.

  The banners are included in the streetscape works. Subject to funding, there will be an option to evolve and change the banner designs every few years. While we will use the most durable materials possible, it is inevitable that the wind, sun and rain take their toll on banner fabric and that they will need to be periodically replaced. This will create the opportunity to evolve or update the designs for the banners over time.

  Council is still in the design phase for the new signs and banners. Council has received funding to enable it to install new banners as part of the Sydney Street Kilmore Rejuvenation . Council is looking at funding options, including potential federal or state government grant funding opportunities. Further discussions would then take place around location and consideration for replacing the existing event and service club signs.

• Historic stories

  Location 1: Red Mail Box – Mill Street Mall

  The Mail Run - "my track to Kilmore"

  • The first contract to transport mail from Sydney to Melbourne left on 30 December 1837, arriving a fortnight later.
  • Overlanders from New South Wales used the route through Kilmore, which was part of the mail run between Melbourne and Sydney.
  • The post box outside No. 38 Sydney Street is an example of an authentic Victorian-era post box (although it may not be the first one placed on the site).

  Location 2: Oddfellows Café

  Oddfellows / Astor Theatre - A building of many memories.

  • Home of "new generation dancing" in late 1800s
  • Cinema for community & Home of local debutante ball centrally heated by a burning drum placed internally 1930s - 1960s
  • Hardware and Furniture store 1960s
  • Have a look at the back of the building for original signage

  Location 3: Suggestions wanted

  1855 Old Township Plan

  • The 1855 Plan of the Old Township of Kilmore shows numerous buildings fronting Sydney Street, and a few in Patrick Street, in the Town Centre Precinct. Some are named, including: Bank, Dunrobin Castle Inn, Red Lion Inn, Royal Oak Inn and Kilmore Inn
  • In 1856 the occupants of Sydney Street included

  Location 4: 39 Sydney St.

  An address of many identities

  • Early 1850s this site was occupied by a steam-operated flour mill
  • 1883 The Colonel Bank is built and begins to trade from this address
  • Continues to operate as financial institution until 1942
  • Later occupied by the Kilmore Free Press and an infant welfare centre.

  Location 5: 70 Sydney St

  Black Bull Hotel and Stores

  • Wholesale and Retail grocer, Ironmonger, wine and spirit merchant
  • Described in 1867:
    • The place is, without exception, the most compact and useful building in the town, and its standing in our main street not only serves to beautify the place, but reflects the highest credit upon the spirited proprietor under whose personal supervision the structure was completed.
