Draft policy to identify and eliminate causes of gender inequality in community sports infrastructure

Council has developed a draft Fair Access Policy to assist in addressing barriers experienced by women and girls in accessing and using community sports infrastructure.

The purpose of the policy is to assist Council in the identification and elimination of causes of gender inequality in policy, programs, communications and delivery of services in relation to community sports infrastructure.

This policy will relate to all Council owned and managed community sport and recreation facilities as well as their users including Committees of Management that operate facilities on Council’s behalf.

From July 2024, all Victorian Local Governments will be required to have a Fair Access Policy (or similar) in place to be eligible for State Government Community Sports Infrastructure.

Background

An Inquiry into Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation was established in 2014 to advise the Victorian Minister for Sport on practical actions that the sport and active recreation sector could adopt to enhance participation by women and girls to increase their engagement in leadership and governance roles.

From this Inquiry, a number of recommendations were made and in order to achieve these recommendations, the State Government has developed a Fair Access Policy road-map to assist local Council’s in the development of a Fair Access Policy.

Six (6) Fair Access Principles have been developed by the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation (a State Government department), which have been used to inform Council’s draft policy and action plan. The Fair Access Principles can be viewed in the attached policy under the documents section on this page.

There are a number of ways you can get involved. The community is invited to read the draft Fair Access Policy and Action Plan, available under the documents section on this page, and provide feedback or comments prior to the Policy being proposed for adoption by Council in April 2024.

What happens next

Once the submissions close and the data is reviewed, the policy will be updated and will be reported back to the community once it has been adopted by council.
