Project Closed: Community Emergency Management Plan – Broadford, Sugarloaf Creek and Glenaroua

Survey closed 10 November 2025

Overview

Mitchell Shire Council, together with the Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee and emergency service partners, invited the communities of Broadford, Sugarloaf Creek and Glenaroua to participate in developing a Community Emergency Management Plan.

The project aimed to strengthen local preparedness, improve community understanding of emergency risks, and build more resilient, connected communities.

What We Proposed

  • Develop a community‑led emergency management plan
  • Work in partnership with CFA, SES, Victoria Police and Council
  • Understand community concerns around bushfires, floods, storms and other emergency events
  • Capture local knowledge and readiness levels
  • Improve community involvement in planning, response and recovery

Community Engagement

During the engagement period, we invited residents to share their experiences, concerns and preparedness levels through a short online survey. The information gathered will help shape a plan that reflects local needs and strengthens community resilience.

Engagement Activities

  • Online survey
    Opened until 10 November 2025
Focused on community concerns, preparedness, and lived experience
  • Supporting resources
Emergency preparedness information and links were provided in the survey’s document section.

What We Heard

Feedback highlighted:

  • Community concern about bushfire and storm‑related emergencies
  • A desire for clearer emergency information
  • Varied levels of preparedness across households
  • The importance of stronger connections between the community and emergency services
  • Interest in building knowledge and confidence around emergency readiness

These insights will directly inform the Community Emergency Management Plan.

Outcome

Community feedback is now being reviewed in partnership with emergency service agencies. The draft Community Emergency Management Plan is currently in development.

Once finalised:

  • The plan will be shared with the community on Engaging Mitchell
  • Opportunities for further input will be provided as part of the rollout
  • The plan will support improved preparedness, response and recovery across Broadford, Sugarloaf Creek and Glenaroua
