Seymour Flood Mitigation Project (pre 2019)

Consultation has concluded

The Seymour Flood Mitigation Project is being developed to provide protection to the Seymour Township, property, buildings, essential services and residents against a 1-in-100-year flood from the Goulburn River.

It is estimated that more than 300 properties are vulnerable in such an event including a large part of Seymour's commercial activities and essential services, including the hospital and police station.

Increased protection from flooding offered by the project will provide an opportunity to review the existing flood zoning and overlays which have restricted development in the area.

In 2010, Mitchell Shire Council resolved to complete a planning scheme amendment to obtain the required land for the levee. To support this process, Council has undertaken a number of investigations to determine the best alignment for the levee and to examine the areas of land that may need to be acquired to construct the levee and its associated works.

The levee design is being developed to provide a positive benefit to the community of Seymour and the wider Mitchell Shire, including those outside the levee system.

The design of the levee will be considered simultaneously with the Structure Plan for Seymour and the community ‘Vision for the Town’. The levee will be designed to ensure that, as much as possible, it does not create a physical or visual barrier to enjoyment of the Goulburn River and includes provision for walking and cycling paths linked to the wider regional network.

Levee alignment and design

A key aspect of the detailed design will be to develop site specific design responses to meet the range of landscape, environmental, visual, cultural heritage, recreation, access and residential values that exist across the Seymour Township.

The levee project provides a unique opportunity to add to the connectivity and useability of Seymour’s walking and cycling path network utilising the levee alignment and offering enhanced access to parts of Seymour not currently accessible.
