Local Law 3.1.3 – Noxious Weeds and Vermin

Consultation has concluded.

The Local Law Community and Environment 2022 was adopted at Mitchell Shire Council's July meeting and will come into effect on 1 September 2022.

We thank everyone for their input in to help shape a Local Law that reflects the needs of our community.

Mitchell Shire Council is seeking input from stakeholders and the wider community in relation to the possible expansion of proposed noxious weed and vermin control requirements in their Draft Local Law - Community & Environment Local Law 2022.

In July 2021, Mitchell Shire Council’s Draft Community and Environment Local Law 2022 was released for community consultation, with a number of the proposed changes resulting in extensive feedback and debate across stakeholders and the community.

Council’s existing Local Law - Community Local Law 2013 does not specifically address the control of noxious weeds and vermin.

Within the draft changes that are proposed was the introduction of a definition of what constitutes a noxious weed or vermin, and the proposed introduction of a Local Law specifically relating to their control (Local Law 3.1.3).

In its current format, the Local Law would exclude farming zoned land from the Local Law, but would include ALL other land types.

As a result of the feedback received, Council, at its November 2021 meeting, resolved to further consult the community in relation to the expansion of the proposed Local Law to include farming zoned land, and has been asked to comprehensively review the legal and budgetary impacts of resourcing and enforcing this section of the Local Law.

Council would like community feedback on the proposal to include farming zoned land so we can make an informed decision. To provide feedback, please complete the survey below. Anyone who lodges a submission is also able to speak to their submission before a meeting of Council’s Committee on Monday 2 May 2022.

Survey closes: 9am, Monday 18 April.
