What's in the plan

The draft Climate Emergency Action Plan outlines a path towards a sustainable net zero future for Mitchell and reflects the challenges, needs and capacity of the Mitchell Shire community and Council.

Goals

  1. To reduce the impact of extreme heat across Mitchell Shire

  2. To improve Mitchell Shire’s preparedness to climate change related emergency events .

  3. To protect and enhance the natural environment and support a climate resilient agricultural sector in Mitchell Shire.

  4. To support Mitchell Shire residents, businesses and community groups to reduce emissions.

  5. To accelerate the transition to more sustainable transport solutions in Mitchell Shire.

  6. To empower the Mitchell Shire community to take meaningful action in response to the Climate Emergency

Targets and actions

The plan zero net emission targets and a range of actions for Council and the community.

  • Council target: actions to reach a target of net zero emissions for all non-landfill emissions by 2030 and a long-term net zero target of 2035 for all emissions.

  • Community target: actions for the community reach a target of net zero emissions by 2043 and ways Council can support this.

  • Resilience: actions that Council and the community can take to build resilience to climate impacts.
